Microsoft quietly began testing dark mode improvements in Windows 11 with the August Insider Preview builds. Now the company is officially rolling out the updates, improving dark mode consistency in File Explorer actions, including copying, moving, and deleting files and folders.

Previously, copying large files in Windows 11 would trigger a light-mode dialog even when dark mode was enabled. That is now corrected, along with move and delete dialogs and multiple other interface elements. Microsoft says it’s also refining dark mode visuals in progress bars, chart views, confirmation and error messages, and prompts for skipping, overwriting, or selecting files.

Dark mode first arrived in Windows 10 in 2016, but it has taken nearly a decade for Microsoft to make the experience fully consistent. Several areas still require improvements, including the Run dialog, file properties window, Control Panel, and Folder Options in File Explorer.
