Tinder: Swipe No More — Let AI Choose Your Dates

Swiping on Tinder may soon come to an end for many users. The dating app is being completely turned on its head this year. The app wants to offer its users new options. Among other things, they will soon be able to have potential new dates suggested to them by AI.

Swiping is as much a part of Tinder as double-clicking is to like. It would be inconceivable to separate the two. However, the endless swiping to the left or right in the app has worn users down over the years. Swipe fatigue has set in. The desire to do so has been steadily decreasing since the end of the COVID pandemic. In 2021, Tinder still had 75 million monthly active users, but it only has 50 million today. To counteract this negative trend, the app now wants to offer more functions. AI will now select dates for you.

Tinder “Chemistry”: AI Plays the Matchmaker

Video speed dating, live events, and a whole lot more were used to revitalize it. CEO Spencer Rascoff presented these and numerous other innovations on Wednesday (March 11) at his first product keynote, “Tinder Sparks 2026: Start Something New” in Los Angeles, USA. The app’s core rebranding effort is the “Chemistry” feature. The app wants to use this to provide new dating partner recommendations to you. However, suggestions are not determined by real people, as is the case with competitor Once, but by an artificial intelligence.

It asks you several questions to better assess your interests and personality and spits out new suggestions each day based on this information. In the future, you will also be able to give the AI access to the photos you have saved on your smartphone. This will allow the AI to draw further conclusions about your lifestyle so that it can suggest even more suitable matches for you. Over time, the AI should learn to find matches even faster.

All about Tinder:

  • It entered the market as a free dating app in 2012.
  • Since then, it has become the global market leader and now offers numerous paid features and premium models.
  • Tinder is part of the parent company Match Group alongside Hinge and LoveScout24.

“We’re using AI to make more relevant connections and continuing to set new standards in safety so people feel safe to take the next step,” said Tinder and Match Group CEO Rascoff. “Together, these changes mark the most significant evolution of our app in years, making Tinder more trustworthy, more social, smarter, and more expressive.”

More New Features and a Downer

Tinder also announced another change, primarily meant to increase the security of users and their data. The previously optional photo verification via a short selfie video will soon become mandatory for users. The developer is also revising the design. In the future, profile pictures will cover the entire screen, with a subtle blur effect. As for the new astrology mode, you can enter your birth data to check whether your next date really is a match made in heaven.

Tinder has already tested some of them, but will only start rolling them out in the USA. The event feature, in particular, will initially only be available to beta users in Los Angeles. Here, users can take part in local events to connect in real life.
