Sam Altman Says There Are No Immediate Plans for Ads in ChatGPT Pulse — But Future Monetization Isn’t Off the Table

During a Q&A session with reporters at OpenAI’s DevDay event in San Francisco on Monday, CEO Sam Altman shared that the newly introduced ChatGPT Pulse is his “favorite feature we’ve launched in a long time.” While he emphasized that there are no current plans to include ads, Altman didn’t completely rule out the idea for the future.

ChatGPT Pulse is OpenAI’s latest step toward deeper personalization. The feature enables the chatbot to learn from users’ past conversations and connected apps—such as calendars or email accounts—to deliver a customized daily summary of relevant insights. Each morning, users receive their “pulse,” which may include workout routines, news highlights, language lessons, or even personalized dining recommendations for their upcoming plans. Essentially, OpenAI envisions Pulse as a way for users to start each day with ChatGPT as a personal assistant.

Executives confirmed that the company has discussed the idea of advertising within Pulse, but Altman stated there are no concrete initiatives underway. He noted, however, that he personally enjoys Instagram’s ad experience and suggested that if OpenAI ever introduces ads, they would aim to be contextual, relevant, and helpful to users.

Initially, the team behind Pulse intended to release it to all ChatGPT users, but the feature’s high computational demands limited its rollout to Pro subscribers only, according to details shared during the Q&A.

“To the extent we can find meaningful things that truly help users,” Altman said, “maybe there’s room to explore something there. But, as has been clear, we approach advertising with great caution.
