Nintendo Seeks $4.5 Million in Damages for Alleged Switch Piracy on Reddit

Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against a Reddit user accused of distributing illegal copies of Nintendo Switch games since 2019.

Nintendo Targets Reddit User Over Game Piracy

According to court documents, the Japanese gaming giant is suing James C. Williams, known online as Archbox, for allegedly running unauthorized online stores that distributed pirated Switch titles. Nintendo is seeking $4.5 million in damages and demanding an immediate halt to all related activities.

The lawsuit also claims that Williams used Reddit to encourage piracy within gaming communities. Nintendo discovered his real identity in 2024 through an email address linked to his Reddit account, after years of alleged infringement.

Despite the large sum requested, Nintendo stated in the filing that the amount “doesn’t come close to compensating” the company for the harm caused by Williams’s conduct.

A Long History of Anti-Piracy Legal Battles

The case remains ongoing, but Nintendo’s strong legal record in similar disputes may work in its favor. Over recent years, the company has ramped up efforts to combat game piracy worldwide.

In early 2025, Nintendo won a lawsuit against a French company accused of hosting illegal game files. Around the same time, the Drastic DS emulator disappeared from the Google Play Store, reportedly after legal pressure from Nintendo.

More recently, the company shut down a website that bypassed its console protection systems and was awarded $2 million in damages. In 2024, Nintendo also succeeded in removing Yuzu, a popular Nintendo Switch emulator, from circulation.

Nintendo’s aggressive approach reflects its broader commitment to protecting its intellectual property and discouraging game piracy across online platforms.
