Duolingo Confirms It Will Never Open an Office in San Francisco

Duolingo has made it clear — the popular language learning app says no, non, nein, and nyet to San Francisco.

Headquartered in Pittsburgh, a city far from Silicon Valley’s venture capital scene, Duolingo reaffirmed in a recent LinkedIn post that it will never establish a San Francisco office. The company believes staying in Pittsburgh helps preserve its distinctive culture and values.

“We chose Pittsburgh for our headquarters because we believe meaningful innovation doesn’t require chasing trends or paying sky-high rent,” Duolingo explained in a previous blog post. “For us, Pittsburgh isn’t a ‘backup plan’ to the Bay Area — it’s a deliberate choice.”

In addition to its Pittsburgh HQ, Duolingo maintains U.S. offices in Detroit, New York City, and Seattle. The decision highlights a growing trend: successful tech companies can thrive anywhere, not just in Silicon Valley. This topic will even take center stage at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025, where leaders will discuss the future of innovation beyond the Bay Area.

“Pittsburgh isn’t trying to become the next Silicon Valley — and that’s exactly the point,” the company added.

Maybe Duolingo’s stance doubles as a love letter to its hometown — one still searching for a strong baseball team. But they’re right about one thing: operating away from San Francisco allows them to focus on what truly matters — building impactful technology without the distractions of the Valley.
