Brace Yourself: Next-Gen PlayStation and Xbox Could Launch at $1,000
How much are you willing to pay for your next console? Latest forecasts signal a bleak future for gamers, who may face paying up to $1,000 for their next gaming rig. Here is what analysts are currently saying.
The prospect of electronics becoming more expensive has been a major topic of discussion recently. The main culprit is the memory crisis, which has placed the component supply chain in a chokehold following the AI boom.
Consoles were hit hard, and we have already seen Sony raising prices for the PS5. However, this appears to be just the beginning. Analysts are now predicting this could signal significant hikes for next-gen consoles. Even worse, gamers could be expected to shell out as much as $1,000 for their next system.
The PS5 Price Hike Is Only the Start
Following Microsoft’s lead in hiking Xbox prices last year, Sony recently introduced its own price increases. However, Sony’s jump was even more significant, with the base PS5 and PS5 Pro costing $100 and $150 more, respectively. Analysts are warning that this is merely the start and could pave the way for next-generation consoles like the Sony PS6 and Xbox Project Helix to follow suit.
Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of consultancy Kantan Games, shared his insights with GamesRadar regarding the repercussions of these trends. “I think $999, at least for one variant of the PS6, is not impossible,” Toto stated.
This sentiment was echoed by NYU professor and game researcher Joost van Dreunen. According to him, “we’re quickly moving towards a world in which a $1,000 console will be the norm.” He added that console gaming will become a “luxury expenditure” and believes that next-generation consoles could be priced up to 50% higher than the current ones.
Eventually, this would put consoles on the same price level as high-end gaming PCs.
There’s Still Uncertainty (and Hope) for Gamers
Other analysts have a more mixed viewpoint, offering both a positive and a negative outlook.
Mat Piscatella of Circana told the outlet that there is still “far too much volatility and uncertainty.” He pointed out that it is difficult to make firm predictions given that there are no concrete timeframes yet for the upcoming PS6 and Xbox Project Helix. Therefore, there is a possibility that prices may stabilize or even decrease if the memory crisis eases and other economic factors improve.
So, what does all this mean for gamers? These price hikes have become difficult to avoid, not only due to the memory crisis but also because of geopolitical factors like tariffs. While some increases are likely inevitable, a shift in market conditions could help normalize prices, or at least remove the prospect of further increases.
Manufacturers like Sony and Microsoft may also adopt a wait-and-see approach, potentially delaying the launch of the PS6 and Xbox Project Helix until the market cools off in a way that favors consumers.
